Madrid also has a beach and gets its first blue flag

Spain remains in the first world position of blue flags and has twelve more than last year. Next summer Spain will wear a total of 696 blue flags on beaches, sustainable tourist boats, and marinas. Even a beach in Madrid has obtained its first blue flag.

Madrid does have a beach, in fact, it just got its first blue flag for the best beach. The winner is the beach of Virgen de la Nueva in the swamp of San Juan in the Madrid town of San MartΓn de Valdeiglesias. It is the first beach in the Community of Madrid that will wear a blue flag. In addition, it is one of the few inland beaches that have such a distinction.

To achieve the award, the beaches must meet various environmental criteria, services, safety and good quality waters for bathers. So that the beach of Virgen de la Nueva will achieve the blue flag, the City Council has had to launch a project with different measures: public toilets, delimitation of different areas for bathers and boats, living standards and daily surveillance service.

The provinces that have won the bluest flags are Alicante, Pontevedra, and the Balearic Islands. The autonomous communities that have more blue flags are the Valencian Community (132 shows), Galicia (109 flags) and Catalonia (101 blue flags).

The classification also highlights the beaches that have lost their blue flags compared to last year. La Barceloneta and Nova Icaria, two very famous beaches in Barcelona have lost this award. While in La CoruΓ±a they have removed the blue flag from ten beaches.

This summer 2018, the blue flag can be seen in 590 beaches (eleven more than in 2017), in five tourist boats (two in Malaga and three in Mallorca) and in 101 marinas.

The ranking in the marinas is led by Catalonia with 22 ports, the Balearic Islands with 20, Andalusia with 16, Galicia with 15 and the Valencian Community with 14 ports.
