We look out over the historic bridges of Cantabria in the new Liérganes museum

This is a new exhibition space in the Cantabrian town that brings us closer to the rich heritage of the region, with twelve relevant Cantabria bridges as protagonists. Where can we find it? In the old slaughterhouse of the town, where the Municipal Tourism Office is also located.

There we learn about the two bridges with more history of the municipality: the Puente Mayor de Liérganes and the one of Rubalcaba, in addition to the other ten constructions of the region. The bridges have been selected following different criteria based on seniority, technical innovations, and territorial representativeness. According to their chronology, these are the bridges of the Museum:

  • Four of the oldest in Cantabria: that of the Mace of San Vicente de la Barquera; the Old Bridge of Potes; that of the Fuentona de Ruente; and the medieval Castro Urdiales.
  • Representatives of the Modern Age include that of Arce de Piélagos and Carlos III of Reinosa. Here we also have the two bridges of Liérganes: the Puente Mayor or Puente Romano , built-in 1606 with stone from the river itself, preserved in perfect condition without the need for major restorations; and the Rubalcaba Bridge , from the second half of the 17th century, located in the neighborhood of the same name, which is part of a beautiful complex with the hermitage, the dam and the flour mill.
  • Those of the contemporary era that also have their place is the bridge of the Campoo de Enmedio Railway; that of Golbardo de Reocín; the Hierro bridge located between Bárcena de Cicero and Colindres and the Montabliz viaduct.

A complicated choice among the more than a thousand bridges that are in Cantabria, but a sample of interest that runs through its history thanks to the information panels, a video presentation of all the structures, 360-degree scenes of the areas of each infrastructure and Other multimedia resources.

One more reason to visit Liérganes, the capital of the municipality of the same name, whose urban complex was declared of national historical-artistic interest and is located at the foot of “La Tetas de Liérganes”, the two small elevations of Marimon and Cotillamón. It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.

This museum joins in Liérganes the Interpretation Center of the Fish Man, recently renovated, which includes the story of Francisco de la Vega, the mythical neighbor with scales, whose history is lost in the haze of the legend.

In addition, the municipality could boast an interesting historical ensemble and proposes a trip through time through 20 unique buildings in Liérganes: 500 years of architecture within our reach, from the Renaissance style to the Baroque or to the Indian architecture.

The popular houses, the Palace of Rañada or Cuesta-Mercadillo, the church of San Sebastián, the parish of San Pedro Ad Víncula, the spa, the chapels of the Humilladero and El Carmen, the museum-palace of Elsedo, in Pámanes … are others Attractions of the municipality, along with its rich cuisine.

Today we are left with the new Museum of the Historic Bridges of Cantabria in Liérganes, hoping to look at it and the buildings represented there very soon. Because Cantabria always wants to return …
